I got quite a good shock yesterday when I opened up my electricity bill. Before I give you all the good news, let me explain some of the major energy changes our house has made over the past month or two.
- Room by room, our previous light-bulbs have been thrown out, and have been replaced by those nifty new compact fluorescent light-bulbs. Contrary to popular belief, they are not radically expensive, weighing in at 10-20 bucks a pop, which is more than worth it for what I’m about to reveal about this month’s bill.
But light-bulbs aren’t the only change. We’ve also gotten a new, energy efficient refrigerator to replace our older one, manufactured around 2000 B.C. Actually, the story behind the purchase of this refrigerator is quite interesting, but that’s for another day. You want to hear how much energy and money we saved, right?
- Last month, we used about 750 kilowatts of power. Since I’m no metric genius, I don’t really have a sense of how much that is, but suffice to say it’s about average. But this month, we have used 450 kilowatts of power. No, it’s not a typo. We’ve cut our power use by 300 kilowatts. Amazing.
But how much has this saved us, you ask? Well, last month, the average cost per day for our electricity was just over $2.00. Now, we are paying about $1.50 per day. Incredible. If you saved fifty cents per day, for 365 days, that’s $182.50 that stays in your pocket.
- Now, how many Starbucks Lattes could you buy with that?
Hey, really useful info. Thanks
We’ve been using CFLs for the past several years so I’ve lost track of the savings. With a TV-less lifestyle and energy-efficient ref, my friends really laugh whenever I tell them how much I pay for electricity per month. They always think I’m joking.
